Population

The Atlantic City-Hammonton Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 175,043 in 1970 to 274,549 in 2010. That was an increase of 56.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population increased from 11,363 in 1970 to 43,003 in 2010. That was an increase of 278.4 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 6.5 percent to 15.7 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 41.5 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. Natural change (B-D) was the principal factor adding population in the first period, replaced by NIM in the following two periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, NIM was the primary factor in population increase in all periods, accounting for all of the small population increase in the most recent period.
